Orestes meets Iphigenia

Red-figure Apulian volute Krater 350BC. The handles of this crater, a vessel used for mixing wine and water, are in the form of large curls or volutes, hence the name of this shape, a volute-krater. It depicts a scene of the meeting of Orestes with Iphigenia, now priestess of Artemis in Tauris, On the bottom Orestes seated on the altar with bowed head, Iphigenia and servant. At the top Apollo and Artemis with double spear, divided by a laurel shrub. To the left, Ionic temple with open doors partially covered by grounds.
