Black-figure Amphora 530BC. Panathenaic amphoras were made in to hold the oil that was given as price at the Quadrennial games in Athens. The winner in the Stadion(foot race) would receive 100 amphorasful. These types of amphoras show on one side an armed Athena standing between a pair of columns surmounted by cocks, and on the other side a scene of the sport- in this case a foot race.
