Olympic Dolikhos Race

Black-figure Amphora 330BC. Panathenaic Amphora with lid. They were given as price at the Quadrennial games in Athens. The winner in the Stadion Race would receive 100 amphoras. These types of Amphoras show on one side an armed Athena standing between a pair of columns surmounted by cocks, and on the other side a scene of the sport- in this case a long distance foot race.
