Leonidas and the battle of Thermopylae

Red-figure Volute K rater 450BC.. The handles of this crater, a vessel used for mixing wine and water, are in the form of large curls or volutes, hence the name of this shape, a volutekrater. It depicts King Leonidas of Sparta and his 300 soldiers, who sacrificed themselves by going against thousands of Persians, in order to defend the narrow passage of Thermopylae and give the chance to the rest of the Greek army to retreat into Southern Greece.
