Head of Dionysus

Black-figure Amphora 530 BC. Amphoras were used to hold or carry wine. In many occasions they had a lid. Dionysus is the God of wine, of green growing things and of fertility of the vineyard. The Dionysian cult was associated with wine, dance and everything that gets mankind out of its daily rut. The Dionysian orgies were organized festivals with religious rites and included holy works. The rituals were accompanied by chanting of the dithyramb, the song in worship of Dionysus.
